Supporting our Missionaries

It is with a special reverence that we give thanks for the faithful service of Jit and Jan Yawan. For decades they have passionately shared God’s love through word and deed with marginalised families in Thailand. In November 2024, as they looked towards retirement the following year, Jit sadly passed away. This came as a shock to our mission community and Thailand Team Leader Muana shared with affection about his team mate:
“Jit was a man whose life was a testament to his unwavering faith, love, and genuine humility. His deep conviction in his beliefs was evident not just in words, but in the way he lived - serving others with compassion and grace especially among his people group - the Karen, close to the border with Myanmar. He embraced everyone with open arms making each person feel seen and valued. He leaves behind a powerful legacy of what it truly means to live a life marked by Revelations 17:14 – called, chosen and faithful to HIs lord until his very last breath.”
As a supporter of Jit and Jan, you will have your own reflections on the wonderful man Jit was, and the inspired team that he and Jan made as they lovingly served in Thailand. Together, they established Lanternlight Ministries in 2013 (as a continuation of Candlelight Project) and devoted themselves to investing in the lives of people with disabilities and their families.
Their ministry through Lanternlight was deeply practical as they worked with each family to determine what equipment, therapy and support was needed. They also guided families through the difficult process of accessing the Government support they were entitled to. But their holistic ministry went far beyond the practical. Jan and Jit embodied the good news! They built strong relationships with families, praying with them and sharing the Gospel as trust grew. They ran Christmas events, camps and excursions for the disabled community, ensuring they too had the opportunity for enriching and life-giving activities that facilitated connection.
Jan arrived in Thailand as a young nurse at the Kwai River Christian Hospital in 1977.  She and Jit married and began serving together in 1985. This year marks 48 years of service for Jan, and would have marked her and Jit’s 40th wedding anniversary. Jan is undoubtedly one of Baptist Mission Australia’s longest serving team members and we praise God for her courageous faith and sacrificial love. She is an extraordinary woman of God!
Additionally, Jit, a local man, served as manager of the hospital for a time before completing theological studies at Morling College in Sydney. He was involved in evangelistic outreach, teaching at the Bible school and supporting more than 30 congregations that are scattered along the border between Thailand and Myanmar. He was a great connector with people in his local communities as well as with refugees from Myanmar.
At the end of July 2025, Jan retired from active service with Baptist Mission Australia.
